Eureka is a city in western McPherson County, South Dakota, United States, near the North Dakota state line. The population was 813 at the 2020 census.
Eureka was laid out in 1887, and named "Eureka", a Greek exclamation meaning "I have found it!" The area attracted German-Russian immigrants, who referred to the original settlement as âÂÂSt. Petersburg.â The arrival of the railroad in 1887 spurred the townâÂÂs growth, and it became a major regional hub for wheat production. From 1887 to 1902, Eureka was known as the worldâÂÂs wheat capital.
