Delmaine Donson

Delmaine Donson, is a South African figurative artist, photographer, oil and acrylic painter, based in Cape Town. Her work focuses on women of colour, exploring themes of femininity, cultural identity, and personal presence.

Career

She began her career in commercial photography, including work in stock photography for over seven years, before pursuing independent and stylized artistic photography.

Donson creates figurative portraits using digital media and acrylic painting, often portraying women of colour with a focus on strength, softness, and individuality.

Her photographic style features high contrast lighting, bold use of color, and stylized posing, a departure from her more technical stock photo work.

Donson appeared on SABC 3’s Afternoon Express, where she discussed her journey as a self-taught artist, her background from Mitchells Plain, her love of cooking, and the importance of family.

Her work has been featured in international publications, including Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, and PopSugar.

She illustrated the children's book B is for Black Girl (2019).

In 2019, she was commissioned by Netflix South Africa for their Strong Black Lead campaign, creating an illustration inspired by She's Gotta Have It.
