Many Audichya Brahmins assumed this surname to indicate their expertise and mastery over two Vedas. This surname also denotes the Brahmin caste. It is derived from Sanskrit ' "(one who has studied) two Vedas" (via Middle Indo-Aryan duvea then Old Gujarati duve).
