Chapali Bhadrakali is a village and former Village Development Committee that is now part of Budanilkantha Municipality in Kathmandu District in Province No. 3 of central Nepal. At the time of the 2011 Nepal census it had a population of 10,827 and had 2,574 households in it.
âÂÂChapaliâ means agile, active, or moving. âÂÂBhadrakaliâ is a form of the goddess Kali: âÂÂBhadraâ means auspicious or gentle, and âÂÂKaliâ symbolizes power and destruction. The place was named after the temple of the goddess Bhadrakali located there.
Chapali (à ¤Âà ¤ªà ¤²à ¥Â) means âÂÂagile, livelyâ and comes from Sanskrit à ¤Âà ¤ªà ¤² (capala) meaning âÂÂrestless, quick, energetic. Bhadrakali (à ¤Âà ¤¦à ¥Âà ¤°à ¤Âà ¤¾à ¤²à ¥Â) is a compound of à ¤Âà ¤¦à ¥Âà ¤° (bhadra) meaning âÂÂauspicious, kind, noble, virtuous, refinedâ and à ¤Âà ¤¾à ¤²à ¥ (kÃÂlë) meaning âÂÂthe dark one,â a fierce form of the goddess Durga.
The toponym reflects both descriptive geography (possibly a lively or flowing area) and religious identity, centered on the worship of a powerful female deity.
