Chandrasena Thalangama (13 October 1944 â 4 January 2026) was a Sri Lankan journalist, lyricist and poet. He created many heartfelt songs that became extremely popular, creating a new change in the Sri Lankan music industry.
Thalangama started writing lyrics at the age of 14. However he started career as a journalist after joining Divaina newspaper as a feature writer. Since 1980, he made the paper work under the name Thalangama Chandrasena.
From the 2010s, he continued to write lyrics for new generation, where he mainly collaborated with Charitha Attalage and Ridma Weerawardena. His first "Sansaraye Ma", was also released in 2017, which is sung by Ridma Weerawardena and Anu Madhubhashini. He penned the popular songs such as: "KuvÃÂá¹ÂiyàMÃÂ", "RÃÂdhÃÂvaá¹Âë", "NÃÂá¸Âagam Gëya", "SoyàAavÃÂ", "KampàNovan MahÃÂmÃÂyÃÂ", "SansÃÂrayàMÃÂ", "Heena MakÃÂ", "Rahath Himivarun", "Galana Ganga", "Dura AakÃÂhÃÂ", "Sæḷalihiá¹Âi" and "Yà ÂgÃÂá¹£hvarë". The songs became highly popular among the public as they updated life outlook and blended with traditional Sri Lankan music of Attalage. The song "KuvÃÂá¹ÂiyàMÃÂ" sung by Ridma for the music of Attalage is cited as the masterpiece of Thalangama's work. Even though the song was released in 2017, Thalangama wrote the song way back in 1980.
He also made notable songs for the young singers including, Supun Perera, Prathap Ash, Harshadeva Ariyasinghe, Dinupa Kodagoda, Nuwandi Eranga and Anu Madhubashini.
As a writer, he wrote the books such as: Divya PuthrayÃÂ, Adaraá¹Âëya Aruá¹Âà Âdaya and Landa PuràDuva.
Thalangama was born on 13 October 1944. He was married to Kalyani Amarasinghe and was a father of one child.
Thalangama died on 4 January 2026, at the age of 81. His body was laid to rest at his residence at 25 Lane, Pothuarawa for public rites on 5 January and the funeral took place at the Thalahena Public Cemetery at 3.30 pm on 6 January 2026.
