Center for Forensic Psychiatry

The Center for Forensic Psychiatry is a psychiatric hospital located in Saline, Michigan, that is operated by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The hospital specializes in forensic psychiatry and houses and treats mentally ill individuals who have been charged with a crime but are incompetent for trial, have been deemed not guilty by reason of insanity, or are civilly committed (with or without criminal charges) but deemed too difficult for other state hospitals.

History

The Center for Forensic Psychiatry was first built in 1969 to conduct psychiatric evaluations and restore the competency of Michigan detainees before and during their trials. The center is the only hospital in Michigan certified to conduct evaluations regarding mental competency and criminal responsibility and hears all cases in Michigan where a defendant's mental state is in question.
