The name Praticola was pre-occupied as it had previous been introduced in 1829 by the German naturalist Johann Jakob Kaup. The genus name combines the Ancient Greek úñûñüñùñ/kalamaia meaning "grasshopper" with the genus Anthus Bechstein, 1805.
