Pyà Âlmuban is the name of a special army unit in the time of Korea's Goryeo Dynasty (918âÂÂ1392). The word pyà Âl means of special. Founding of the army was initiated by Yun Kwan during the reign of king Sukjong of Goryeo.
The army was put together to fight the Jurchen who were putting pressure on Goryeo's northern borders. The Goryeo infantry had a hard time resisting the strong Jurchen cavalry.
The Pyà Âlmuban army had six divisions: Yun Kwan's regular army and Armor Guards called chà Ânggyugun (ì Âê·Âêµ°, æ£è¦Âè»Â) Infantry called Sinbogun (ì 보군, ç¥ÂæÂ¥è»Â), Cavalry called Sin'gigun (ì 기군, ç¥Âé¨Âè»Â), an army of Buddhist monks called Hangmagun (ÃÂÂë§Âêµ°, éÂÂéÂÂè»Â), Supporting troop made of slaves called Yà Ânhogun (ì°Ã¸군,çÂÂæ¶è»Â), and volunteered soldiers made of merchants and ordinary citizens called Chubugunhyà Ân (주ë¶Âêµ°ÃÂÂ, å·ÂåºÂé¡縣).
Combating troops were divided into Assassin/Spies called Sinbo (ì 보, ç¥ÂæÂÂ¥), Siege Engineers called Tot'ang (ëÂÂÃÂÂ, è·³è©), Archers called Kyà Ânggung (ê²½ê¶Â, æ¢Âå¼Â), Builders called Chà Ângno (ì Âë ¸, 精弩), Ballistic/Cannon gunners called Palhwa (ë°ÂÃÂÂ, ç¼ç«), and special force called T'à Âgibudae (ù기ë¶ÂëÂÂ, ç¹æÂÂé¨éÂÂ). They were to be trained and maintain/make weapons & fight with regular army.
During the second year of king Yejong of Goryeo's reign the Pyà Âlmuban, consisting of 17,000 soldiers, attacked Jurchen and killed approximately 5,000 Jurchen troops, detained another 5,000 POWs and 350 Jurchen tribal clans and took over their territory by building nine fortresses at Hamju region.
Fortresses were called Northeastern Nine Fortresses, and they are in Hamju (è주, å¸å·Â), Yà Ângju (ìÂÂ주, è±å·Â), Ungju (ì 주, éÂÂå·Â), Pokju (복주, ç¦Âå·Â), Kilju (길주, Ã¥ÂÂå·Â), Konghà Âmjin, (ê³µÃÂÂì§Â, å ¬å½éÂÂ), Sungnyà Âng (ìÂÂë Â, å´Â寧), T'ongt'ae (õÃÂÂ, éÂÂæ³°), and Chinyang (ì§ÂìÂÂ, çÂÂé½).
However internal trouble at the Goryeo court later forced the Goryeo army to leave Jurchen territory just after few years.
