Aurel Eugen Munteanu (born 28 January 1955) is a Romanian former football midfielder.
Munteanu was born on 28 January 1955 in Sibiu, Romania. He began his senior football career in 1972 at Divizia B club CSM Sibiu, and one year later moved to ÃÂoimii Sibiu in the same league.
After one season he joined Sportul StudenÃÂesc BucureÃÂti where on 25 August 1974 he made his Divizia A debut under coach Angelo Niculescu in a 2âÂÂ0 home victory against Universitatea Craiova. His first performance was reaching the 1979 Cupa României final, but coach Mircea RÃÂdulescu did not use him in the eventual 3âÂÂ0 loss to Steaua BucureÃÂti. He helped the team win the 1979âÂÂ80 Balkans Cup which is the only trophy he won during his career. During his time with The Students, Munteanu made seven appearances in the UEFA Cup over the course of four seasons, helping his side eliminate Olympiacos in the first round of the 1976âÂÂ77 edition. Subsequently, in the 1984âÂÂ85 season, in the same round, he played in a historical 1âÂÂ0 victory against Inter Milan, but did not qualify further as they lost 2âÂÂ0 in the second leg. In the 1985âÂÂ86 season, he helped Sportul finish second in the championship.
After 12 seasons spent at Sportul, Munteanu went to Petrolul PloieÃÂti where on 18 October 1986 he made his last Divizia A appearance in a 3âÂÂ0 away loss to Dinamo BucureÃÂti, totaling 209 matches with nine goals in the competition.
After ending his football career, Munteanu became a businessman. His fortune is estimated by the Romanian press at figures between â¬85 â 87 million.
