Assam Saurabh (also spelled Assam Saurav) is the second-highest civilian award of the Government of Assam, India. It was instituted in 2021 to recognise individuals for exceptional service and achievements across diverse fields of human endeavour.
The award forms part of the Assam Civilian Awards system, which also includes the higher Assam Baibhav and the third-highest honour Assam Gaurav. These awards are modelled on IndiaâÂÂs national civilian honours such as the Bharat Ratna and Padma Awards.
The Assam Saurav award was announced on 2 December 2021 on the occasion of Asom Divas (Assam Day) as part of a broader initiative by the Government of Assam to institute state-level civilian honours. The awards are presented at official state ceremonies attended by constitutional authorities including the Governor and Chief Minister.
The Assam Saurav is awarded for âÂÂexceptional service or performance of the highest orderâ in any field of human endeavour. The selection is carried out by a committee constituted by the Government of Assam, based on nominations received from the public and institutions.
The award recognises contributions across fields such as science, arts, sports, public service and industry, reflecting a broad and inclusive approach to honouring excellence.
Recipients of the Assam Saurav are presented with a citation, a medallion and a cash prize of â¹4 lakh. The medallion is engraved with "Assam Saurabh" in Assamese script along with the image of Xorai on the front and 'Government of Assam' in Assamese script with the National Emblem of India on the reverse. In addition, awardees are entitled to several state privileges, including accommodation at Assam Bhawans and circuit houses for a specified duration.
The Assam Saurav award has been conferred upon individuals from diverse backgrounds including sports, science, arts, public service and industry, reflecting the cultural and professional diversity of Assam.
