All 40 seats in the Kansas Senate were up for election and the primary was held on August 2, 2016. Prior to the election, 32 seats were held by Republicans and 8 seats were held by Democrats. The general election saw Democrats flipping a single seat, however Republicans retained their majority in the State Senate.
