- Lithuania officially adopts the euro as its currency, replacing the litas, and becomes the 19th Eurozone country.
- The Eurasian Economic Union between Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia comes into effect.
- 3 January â The Islamic-rooted government of Turkey authorizes the building of the first church in the country since 1923.
- 4 January â Eight people are presumed dead after the Cyprus-flagged cargo ship MV Cemfjord capsizes off the northern coast of Scotland.
