Championship title battle between Galatasaray Istanbul and BeÃÂiktaÃÂ Istanbul

Denizlispor player Mesut Bakkal from the 1986Ã¢ÂÂ87 season revealed in his biography in March 2020 that he and his Denizlispor team had been doped on the penultimate match day against favourites and championship contender BeÃÂiktaÃÂ Istanbul. They had been promised (motivation bonuses) by the other championship contender, Galatasaray Istanbul, if BeÃÂiktaÃÂ lost point(s). The match ended in a 1-1 draw, meaning that championship contender BeÃÂiktaÃÂ lost a point in the title battle, with the doped football team having a decisive influence on the championship battle. At the end of the 1986Ã¢ÂÂ87 season, Galatasaray won the SÃÂ¼per Lig championship by a single point ahead of BeÃÂiktaÃÂ after a 14-year absence from the championship.

After the book was published, BeÃÂiktaÃÂ Istanbul officially requested the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) to retroactively award BeÃÂiktaÃÂ a 3Ã¢ÂÂ0 victory in the match between BeÃÂiktaÃÂ and Denizlispor and to award them the 1987 Turkish championship, based on the information provided by Bakkal. Bakkal defended the Ã¢ÂÂmotivation bonusÃ¢ÂÂ, which was not prohibited at the time, as it was not until 1998 that the TFF banned the acceptance of motivation bonuses by others. In June 2020, the TFF rejected BeÃÂiktaÃÂ's request on the grounds of the statute of limitations.

According to an analysis by a Turkish lawyer in July 2020, there is no statute of limitations in this case and BeÃÂiktaÃÂ should take further legal action against the TFF decision.
