• The 1000th anniversary of the founding of the Icelandic parliament. Iceland celebrated with the unveiling of the Leif Erikson statue in Reykjavík, a gift from the United States, sculpted by Alexander Stirling Calder; Leif Erikson's monument marked Iceland's historic parliamentary milestone.
