• April 2 - Assassination attempt on Tsar Alexander II by Alexander Soloviev. Soloviev shot four times from his gun but failed to hit Alexander II.

• August 15 - The revolutionary organization Land and Liberty split into the terrorist wing Narodnaya Volya and the political wing Black Repartition.

• December - The Narodynaya Volya group sets off an explosion on a train, attempting to kill the Tsar, but misses his train.
